I remember in my late teens, feeling a pull toward open spaces, the sky,
flight and learning to fly. Life was busy at the time, so the idea of flying was
set aside. Thirty years later, the same thoughts bubbled to the surface,
prompted by the passing of my dad who had been a WW II flight instructor.
I promised myself that when his life was quieted I would investigate the
feelings. I guess you could say that it is in the blood.
I did not know of a private flight school in the Sault, so I spoke with a few out
of town friends who had received their PPL. I heard a lot of good stuff, but it
was the bad that got my attention. I heard stories about students that were
frustrated and angry with instructors who would surprise them with
maneuvers in the air, and expect them to recover when they were far too
inexperienced to do so. Left feeling nervous and anxious, one friend did not
return to flying. Another, put it like this; “If it were not for the money already
spent, I probably would have said forget it.”
Another said “I keep reminding myself that I am paying this guy to teach me
this stuff and that I am supposed to be having fun.” I assumed that all of this
had something to do with a guy tired of his job and in desperate need of a
pay check. I now understand that in SOME cases, young instructors are
simply packing in the hours with the intention of one day working for the big
airlines. Too bad for the humble, unsuspecting flight student !
While at a gathering one evening, I heard the name Soo Aviation and in spite
of the negatives that I’d heard about other flight schools, I called and booked
a discovery flight with the chief flight instructor, Sasha. Immediately after
doing so, I began to wonder how THIS woman, (should I decide to follow
through), was going to feel about spending an extensive amount of time
crammed into a small space with a guy that I did not know. I have to say that
I was pleasantly surprised to find myself feeling immediately comfortable
with Sasha. He has been a complete and absolute gentleman who from my
first moments in the plane, truly believed that I could accomplish my goal,
even when I was not so sure that I could. Along with being incredibly patient,
he is one of those wonderful people who sees the best in everyone. He
remembers and uses the difficulties he experienced in his own flight training
to make him a compassionate instructor. Sasha is a highly intelligent,
motivated, and very determined man, who when knowing how serious you
are about flying, will never give up on you. For me personally, he seemed to
understand from the get go, that readiness was very important to me and he
never pushed faster than my capabilities allowed, and He is as passionate
about flying as he is about his own family. My only regret is that I didn’t do
this sooner.
All in all, Sasha is a warm, open, gentle and fun individual with a great
sense of humor and a VERY quick wit,(LISTEN CAREFULLY-YOU JUST
MIGHT MISS IT-AND BELIEVE ME, IT WILL LEAVE YOUR HEAD SPINNING !)
Sasha's concern for your safety will be every bit as important as his desire
for you to have fun.

Thanks for all of your help learning to fly - for everyone reading this - he is a
great teacher, my Grandmother asks about him (she remembers him and
she is 100!) and even my wife liked him despite my spending so much time
with him.
